SIDE PROGRAM

Exclusively for the MENA Film Festival, Satyakam Mohkamsing (violin), Ilyas Nadjafi (vocals) and Tarang Poddar (tabla) play some beautiful classical pieces and songs from the east such as the ghazal and dhrupad. The ghazal form is ancient and has its origins in 7th century Arabic poetry. The ghazal spread to South Asia in the 12th century due to the influence of Sufi mystics and the courts of the new Islamic Sultanate, and is now most notably a form of poetry of many languages of the Indian subcontinent and Turkey. Dhrupad is a genre in Hindustani classical music from the Indian subcontinent. It is the oldest style of the main vocal styles associated with classical Hindu music, Haveli Sangeet, and also related to the South Indian Carnatic tradition.
